| Hoodia Phytopharm -
Phytoparm owns the patent to P57 (the steroidal glycoside
responsible for its appetite reducing effects) and no other
company or indivudal can sell Hoodia as a weight loss aid.
Pfizer entered a deal with Phytopharm and tried to isolate
P57 into a form that could be marketed to the public. After
exhaustive research and several years they determined that
this was no possible, and they pulled out of the agreement.
Than Phytoparm announced on December 15 2004 that they have
granted an exclusive global license to its Hoodia Gordonni
extract to Unilever plc, the global consumer products
company and owner of a number of the world’s leading brands.
Unilever and Phytopharm will collaborate on a five stage
research and development programme of safety and efficacy
studies with a view to bringing new products to market.
Unilever will also manage a separate agronomy programme and
will support the international patent programme for the
products.
